Short story of Yous Phat Sophanna
Phana was born on 06th October 1999 in Tropeang Jour village, Andong Pou commune, Reameas Heak district, Svay Rieng province. This province, bordering with Vietnam, is located in the southeast of Cambodia. It is 131 kilometers from Phnom Penh city.
There are five members in her family and she is the second child. Her parents are farmers in that village; however, farming life in Cambodia isn’t easy especially under the climate change and there are no technical skills for normal farmers so they primarily depend on raining for a rice field. Her oldest sister had already finished high school and becomes a factory worker while her youngest sister is in grade 10. She will be the first daughter to finish a Bachelor degree if she has a chance to pursue her studies in a university. Without supports, she might end up like her sister being a factory worker in that village.
Phanna finished high school this year and her passion is Information Technology major if she can have an opportunity to continue. She is just a nineteen-year-old woman yet she has volunteered with several NGOs and one of which is STAR Kampuchea. She has been a Community Accountability Facilitator (CAF) with STAR Kampuchea for one year.
The reasons why we want to help her because she is passionate to pursue her study in a university, but under financial constraints, she cannot get this chance if she solely relies on her parents. They can support only her accommodation and daily expenses if she moves to the city to study; however, they cannot afford her school fee for those four years at all.
The school fee is 550$ per year and it takes four years for a Bachelor degree. Additionally, we also see a possibility of her assistance to her family especially her sister who will finish high school in the next two years. Phanna might be able to seek a job if she has a degree from a university.
